6th Free Robotics Marathon

For this year the Marathon in addition to making official the Free Robotics Olympics – that before had the nature of the workshop – we will also offer the following workshops:

Basic Free Robotics Workshop – the Deployment of Parallel Ports in the development of Free Pedagogy Kits (Interface Free Hardware and Cognitive Artifact)

Advanced Free Robotics Workshop – deployment of USB based on arduine or gogo board in the development of Free Teaching Kits (Interface Free Hardware and Cognitive Artifact)

the objectives of the workshops are the development of art and technology projects based on Free Pedagogy Robotics; and the cognitive development of the social players involved in this process of teaching and learning based on appropriation as form of digital emancipation.

The projects developed in the workshops will be entitled to participating in the Free Robotics Olympics, as long as they comply with the regulations.

Workshop presentation

In the workshops, the knowledge will be shared by way of collaboration among groups. Each workshop will have a maximum attendance of 20 people (subdivided into five groups of four people), since each group will build one Free Hardware Interface (IHL) , in addition to building a “technological – robotic artifact (cognitive artifact)” using scrap material, which will be controlled by the IHL.

The groups will be formed on the first day of the Olympics and, over the course of the event each group will define the base material it will take to the Olympics (bearing in mind the constraints of the IHL and the competition period). On the last day, each group will present its “cognitive artifact” built from “technology – electronics waste”. A commission formed by engineers from Itaipu Binacional, representatives of communities and other guests will appraise the artifact builds and the best project will win a prize to be defined by Latinoware’s organizing committee.

The IHL interface is responsible for the communication between the control software and electronic devices to be commanded. It has low cost and easy assembly characteristics since nearly all the electronic components are found in obsolete equipment or unused computer and electronic devices. Components that are difficult to find in waste equipment can be purchased in electronic ware shops. Based on the IHL project, participants build their own IHL in groups. It is worth highlighting that there is no charge for the basic materials.

Stages

1. Awareness Raising – free robotics lecture to clarify the pedagogy proposals and activities.

2. Driving Topics – demonstration of the operation and deployment possibilities for robotic technologies as project integration elements, around which the activities proposed are structured.

3. Basic Formation - specific learning at a sufficient level for the understanding of the devices and resources (IHL, DEC and SASL) of the following computer science related contents: electricity and electronics; binary logic; programming language: Shell script, C++ and Logo; assembly of printed circuit board; notions of electromechanical devices: motors and sensors; construction and reuse of materials: pulleys, gears, shafts; project design notions.

4. DEC Control Tests – using DEC models built and tested previously by the proponent of the course, the group visualizes concretely the control of DEC’s using robotics. In this stage, participants learn to assemble DEC and the necessary circuits (IHL, wiring, power source connection, etc.), using the IHL and DEC made available.

5. Planning the DEC control design - organization of the group into smaller subgroups, called teams. Each team presents and discusses in its own group its specific project, which should have a name, description, assembly diagram, materials schedule and a sketch for an initial timeline.

6. Assembly of the IHL – at a first moment, the proponent of the course indicates in which obsolete or unused equipment the components can be found to assemble the IHL. Based on this driving year, the proponent instigates the groups to researching other alternative equipment sources to extract the components required in assembling their IHL.

7. Assembly of the DEC control projects – in this stage, the proponent of the course indicates the equipment that usually contain the electromechanical devices, such as motors and sensors, in addition to materials that will help participants to assemble their DEC control projects, such as shafts, pulleys, gears, wiring, wiring terminals, resistors, etc. It is worth reminding that this possibility is not limited to computer equipment and the proponent instigates participants to look for other alternative sources.

8. Assessment – the assessment is cyclical, i.e., the activities carried out in the project development are assessed the whole time, as are the processes involved and the final product in FREE PEDAGOGY ROBOTICS.

It is advisable that students should have knowledge in electronics (corrosion of printed circuit boards, welding of electronic components, etc.) and basic knowledge of programming language (programming will be done in shell script using applications Kommander, C++ and other programming languages). Each group will be followed up by students of engineering, pedagogy, architecture, fine arts and other different areas of knowledge made available by the Organizing Committee for the purpose of providing support in the workshop activities.

Observations:

  • it is worth highlighting that the organizing committee will provide the necessary technology – electronic waste to carry out the Olympics, and the teams bring their own waste only if they choose to.
  • The organizing committee will also make available a basic toolkit (cutting and holding pliers; Phillips and regular screwdrivers, welding iron, weld sticks and circuit board drill). Given that the kit made available is comprised of basic tools only, participants are suggested to bring their own toolkits from their workshops (printed circuit board drill, roll of fine weld, 830 hole or more proto-board, 30-watt welding iron with thin tip; weld suction, iron perchlorate, plastic container to hold the iron perchlorate: 30 x 25 cm and 10 to 15 cm high; overhead projector marker or CD marker; printed board marker and cutting device; plier sets: cutting and holding; screwdriver sets: Phillips and regular; stiletto; silicone tube) to facilitate/help in the faster execution of the Free Robotics projects.
